DIY stores lose market share in the German DIY market

The DIY and home improvement stores in Germany lost market share in the whole do-it-yourself market from 2005 to 2015, namely from eleven to 9.3 per cent. In comparison, the handicraft trade increased its market share from 47.4 per cent to 51.5 per cent. The distance trade - including mail order, Internet pure player and direct sales from manufacturers - increased its share of the DIY market from 2.6 per cent to 3.5 per cent. These are the findings in the new study "The DIY market in Germany" from the IFH Cologne and Klaus Peter Teipel Research & Consulting.
The revenue in the entire DIY market, which includes all DIY relevant revenue in various sectors, not just in the DIY trade, grew again in 2015 by one per cent to around € 229 bn (including VAT). On average, every Germany spent € 2 818 on paint, screws, windows, plants etc. last year.
