Home Depot is hoping to gain market share in Canada with a smaller store format

Home Depot is planning future expansion by means of neighbourhood stores in smaller Canadian towns. The new store format will be around half the size of Home Depot’s typical bix boxes and will stock a slimmed-down range of building materials and decoration products. Next year should see the initial launch of three of this new type of store, which will have retail areas of between 5 000 and 6 000 m². Home Depot expects this step will increase its market share in Canada, which it claims to be around eleven per cent at present. At the end of 2003 Home Depot’s presence in Canada amounted to a total of 102 DIY stores with a combined retail area of 1.89 mio m².
