Mr. DIY, Malaysia's biggest home improvement store chain, is pushing the use of its online store after the government imposed stringent controls on movement in the country.

In an announcement on its website, Mr. DIY said its official online store,, "will continue to receive and deliver orders" while the country is in a lockdown. Malaysia issued a "movement control order" effective March 18 to keep people in their homes. The lockdown - which shut down all but essential business premises, closed down schools and government agencies except those that deliver basic services such as water, electricity and telecommunications, and restricted entry of foreigners and the outbound travel for all Malaysians - prevails until April 14. Military personnel have been enlisted and checkpoints have been set up.

Mr. DIY, whose stores are shuttered in accordance with the quarantine measures, said that from March 31, only the "most essential items" are being sold through the website.

In areas that are in complete lockdown due to a high concentration of Covid-19 patients and where roads are blocked, deliveries will need to be rescheduled after the lockdown period, it added.

The company, which has close to 600 stores around Malaysia, is providing logistics support in an initiative by Malaysian businesses to assist the frontliners in the country's fight against Covid-19, utilising its delivery fleet to distribute medical safety gear to hospitals around the country. Ahead of its planned stock market debut, Mr. DIY also donated 1 000 personnel protective equipment to medical personnel in the country.

The Covid-19 outbreak has infected 2 766 people in Malaysia, as of noon of March 31. Of these, 537 have recovered while 43 have died.
