Leroy Merlin opened a logistics centre in Kazakhstan at the start of May prior to entering the market there. Part of the French outfit Groupe Adeo, the home improvement chain will open its first store in the country in Almaty in August 2018. It had originally aimed to launch in June.

"The commissioning of the Leroy Merlin warehouse in Kazakhstan is a strategic move prior to the opening of our first branch in Almaty," said country head Marc Louchet. "It signifies our serious long-term commitment to this market. Kazakhstan is the thirteenth country in which Leroy Merlin will operate stores."

The new warehouse covers an area of nearly 7 000 m². It has 8 000 pallet spaces and nine docks to cater for deliveries to up to eight stores.

A second store is planned in Almaty, the country's most prosperous city, followed by openings in Astana, Shymkent, Pavlodar, Karaganda and Aktobe. Two stores per year are expected to be opened, amounting to 25 to 30 outlets in the next 15 years. With regard to the product range, Russian manufacturers and wholesalers feature prominently so far and the search for Kazakh producers continues, according to the company.

The French DIY giant and European market leader is the first international DIY retailer to enter the Kazakh market. It is targeting a market share of 25 to 30 per cent in the short term with its strategy of permanently low prices.
