The Top 20 lose compared to 2020, but clearly gain compared to 2019

In 2021, the 20 largest German DIY retailers in Germany and abroad generated a total of EUR 1.052 bn less than in 2020 (-12.8 per cent). This is a first and still preliminary result of the current Statistik Baumarkt + Garten (Statistics DIY and garden retail) by the editorial team of the German trade journal Fachmagazin diy, published by specialist publisher Dähne Verlag. However, the authors urge caution when comparing the sales figures for 2021 and 2020, as the 2020 figures came about under the extraordinary conditions of the coronavirus boom. A comparison with the figures of the pre-coronavirus year 2019 is more meaningful: the German DIY store operators exceeded the sales level of the latter by 7.1 per cent.

The domestic figures look somewhat worse. Compared to 2020, the DIY stores in Germany have turned over 6.6 per cent less. Compared to 2019, on the other hand, the 20 largest German DIY operators still show a 5.2 per cent increase in sales.

The large German DIY operators did better abroad. Here, they achieved a sales increase of 5.8 per cent in 2020. The reason for the more positive development abroad: in 2020, the coronavirus-related losses had a greater impact here than in Germany. Compared to the pre-coronavirus year 2019, foreign sales increased even more, by 10.9 per cent.

Hornbach with highest growth rate

Among the Top 5 German DIY store operators (Obi, Bauhaus, Hornbach, Hagebau retail and Toom), Hornbach achieved the highest growth rate: the company increased its sales in Germany and abroad by 3.5 per cent. All others show a partly moderate minus, Toom, however, a minus of 10.8 per cent, Hagebau's retail trade of 13.1 per cent. Compared with the sales figures from the pre-coronavirus year 2019, however, the Top 5 are still in the plus range, with the exception of Hagebau (-3.5 per cent). Hornbach is again the best performer with a 20.5 per cent increase in sales.
