This year the total number of French DIY stores has risen by 60 outlets to 3 054 stores (up by 2.7 per cent). This contrasts with the 6.3 per cent increase in retail area. Which indicates that the trend towards large-format outlets is continuing, according to a study carried out by the manufacturers’ association UNIBAL that was correct in September. The average size of stores (in excess of 300 m²) has gone up to 2 196 m². The greatest increase in outlets was evident in the 5 000 m² to 7 500 m² size category. However, looking back at the past five years, the medium-sized DIY stores with retail areas between 2 500 m² and 5 000 m² are showing the greatest growth. Their total number rose by 55.5 per cent over this period. Their share of the total store portfolio amounts to 15.4 per cent.
