Wyevale sales on roller-coaster ride

The biggest UK garden centre chain has completed the first half-year with figures down

Wyevale, the UK garden centre operator and market leader, has taken over Jack’s Patch Garden Centre, which was previously run by Great Park Nurseries in Devon. The covered retail area comes to around 3 400 m². Wyevale had already acquired another garden centre at Carr Gate, Wakefield in April.
The first six months brought the group a roller-coaster sales ride. Altogether group sales of £ 108.2 mio (€ 161.7 mio) were down by 1.9 per cent on last year’s figure and by 1.7 per cent in like-for-like terms. January and February saw sales increase by 7.3 per cent like-for-like. However, in March came a shortfall of 31 per cent compared with strong trading in March 2003. April (3.8 per cent) and May (16.6 per cent) proved to be good months, but then like-for-like sales went down again by seven per cent in June.
