What is to be done with the plastic currently polluting the world's oceans, as featured in the BBC's Blue Planet series recently? Make garden furniture! At any rate, that's what Dutch manufacturer Van De Sant and designer Claire Rendall are doing. They are launching a collection made from recycled plastic that has been recovered from the ocean.
Even though these products are not distributed through DIY stores, this is news that the diyonline editorial team finds interesting. Of the 300 million tons of plastic produced globally each year, 8 million tons find their way into the oceans, where 5.25 trillion pieces of waste plastic now languish. 296 000 tons are located on the surface, while roughly 4 billion plastic microfibres per square kilometre litter the seabed.
