Kingfisher opens first net zero energy store

According to Kingfisher, the Screwfix store that recently opened in Peterborough is the first in the company's portfolio with net zero energy consumption. The store is powered by a combination of solar modules, solar battery storage and air heat pump. According to the retailer's annual sustainability report, the net zero energy building will generate as much power as it consumes and any excess energy will be fed into the electricity grid.

Graham Bell, CEO of Screwfix, commented: ʺWe are investing to save energy in our own businesses. Our 'Net Zero Store' in Peterborough is an important milestone in our endeavours to anchor sustainability throughout the company." The sustainability report highlights the advances made by Kingfisher in reaching its sustainability targets, such as e.g. generating a third of group sales with products that make customers' homes more sustainable, as well as a reduction in absolute CO2 consumption of 16 per cent since 2010/11.
