Hardware retail of the US reaches a 5.5 per cent growth

According to estimates by Hardware Retailing, the publication of the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA), the hardware retail industry in the USA made sales of USD 394.0 bn in the year 2018, which is now drawing to a close. That would be an increase of 5.5 per cent. Almost a quarter - slightly more than USD 100.9 bn - is accounted for by market leader Home Depot, Lowe's reaches USD 68.6 bn. However included in these figures are also the international sales by these companies. Menards follows with considerable distance and sales of USD 10.0 bn.

In terms of sales channels there is the following breakdown: home centres represent USD 245.5 bn, lumber and building material dealers made sales of USD 97.7 bn and hardware stores USD 50.8 bn.

The NRHA estimates that the number of stores has practically remained the same compared to the previous year. Thus, there are currently around 19 250 hardware stores, 9 785 home centres and 9 730 lumber and building material dealers, so around 38 795 stores in total.

Two chains have been newly included in the analysis. The first is Tractor Supply with sales of USD 7.3 bn and 1 725 stores. It targets farmers and suburban customers with large gardens or yards and are frequently horse or pet owners. Its products include a wide range of basic hardware items, pet supplies, including horse needs, and work clothing.
