Apart from Bauhaus and Silvan, which have belonged to the German investment company Aurelius since 2017, only native companies are active in the Danish home improvement trade. Conversely, it is Danish companies such as Harald Nyborg or Flügger who, in turn, have expanded into the foreign Nordic countries.
Of the five regions in which DIY stores exist at all - this is not the case on the Faroe Islands and on Greenland with their around only 50 000 inhabitants each - the region around the capital of Copenhagen on the island of Zealand does stand out; here there are almost 14 000 inhabitants to one DIY store, across the country the figure is slightly more than 9 000.
The fact that the Greater Copenhagen area, in which almost a third of the Danes live, really could do with a few more DIY stores can be seen by the chains with their large-scale formats as well as by the specialist groups. For example the German chain Bauhaus has only four locations in the capital and therefore just as many as in the less populated Central Denmark.
In the case of Harald Nyborg and Jem & Fix, who belong to the same group, it's a similar situation. An exception here are the chain stores by the paint producer Flügger and the Silvan chain, whose stores are among the larger formats with an average retail space of 2 260 m². These two each have the largest share of their market portfolio in the capital region.
And it also worth mentioning here that Bilka is listed in the statistics produced by the Dähne Verlag publishing house too. This Danish discounter is active in several assortment ranges and is also considered to be strong in the DIY field.
