From the south, the Nordics tend to be seen as a unified region - however this doesn't do justice to the different cultures and economies in the countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Most striking is the non-uniformity when it comes to Finland, with its unique language (which is only related to Hungarian) and which sees itself as Nordic but not as a Scandinavian country. The Finns, although belonging to Sweden for a long time, were not Vikings.
The region also presents itself as inhomogeneous in terms of income distribution. The GDP per capita ranges from EUR 46 600 in Finland to EUR 67 100 in oil-producing Norway.
Also in consumer habits, particularly when it comes to DIY and gardening, the Nordic countries are different, as shown by statistics from the Dähne Verlag publishing house as well as reports and interviews in this edition of DIY International with its regional report on the Nordics.
The Danish trade expert Jørgen Moth summarises the present situation in the industry:The Danish people like the DIY concept compared to Norway, where they are not as fond of this market. Bauhaus are in big trouble in this market and has no further plans for new stores other than the two they have in the Oslo area. However, the Bauhaus stores are doing well in Sweden, Finland and Denmark but not in Norway and Iceland.
The Swedish-owned DIY stores have expanded to Norway and Finland but have not yet expanded to Denmark.
The Finish Kesko has expanded to Norway and Sweden. They would like to expand to the Danish market at some point, but do not know which chain to acquire.
Optimera (Saint-Gobain) is established in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. In the Danish market they are having difficulties and have a very insignificant market share.
