Koelnmesse, event organiser of Eisenwarenmesse - International Hardware Fair, has published the following message in connection with the discussion about the coronavirus:
"Over the past few days, Koelnmesse has received many enquiries on the Eisenwarenmesse - International Hardware Fair concerning the worldwide discussions about the occurrence of the Corona Virus, which faces both Koelnmesse and the entire industry with a major challenge.
Eisenwarenmesse - International Hardware Fair is being staged in Cologne from 1 to 4 March 2020. The top priority is the health of all of the trade fair participants. As before, Koelnmesse still places its trust in the assessments of the Federal Government and the international and German health authorities. Their unanimous recommendation is be cautious and take preventative measures, however at present they see no reason to limit the conducting of major events in Germany. All reasonable preventative measures will be taken and both the visitors and exhibitors will be correspondingly informed and advised in the run-up to and during the event.
This also means: A case of force majeure does not exist in Germany. As the organiser, Koelnmesse has an obligation to fulfil the agreements entered with the exhibitors and visitors and also to offer them an optimum forum under the given circumstances. This will occur against the backdrop of the situation in Germany. The fact that the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was cancelled a few days again, can thus not be taken as the benchmark. In this connection, the German trade fair organisers have also underlined in a joint statement the fact that they will be staging all upcoming trade fairs.
It is very difficult to assess at this point in time which effects the current situation will have on the Eisenwarenmesse - International Hardware Fair in concrete terms. Discussions were naturally held about the virus in Cologne over the past few days at the International Sweets and Biscuits Fair, ISM, ProSweets Cologne, spoga horse FASHION DAYS as well as at several guest events, but these didn't impact the outcome of the trade fairs in any way. Ultimately, 7 of the approx. 70 Chinese exhibitors awaited were not present at ISM, around 300 Chinese visitors attended the trade fair. At the previous event the figure was 400.
Of course, Koelnmesse has to assume that the progressing public discussion will lead to adverse effects for the Eisenwarenmesse - International Hardware Fair. So far only a few Chinese and non-Chinese exhibitors have cancelled their participation. One thing is certain: The Chinese authorities have strictly sealed off the endangered regions, the low number of infections outside of China to-date speaks in favour of the effectiveness of these measures."
