Brits could spend GBP 4.94 bn on improving their homes and gardens before Christmas, according to a new analysis released by the consulting company Kantar. DIYers say they still have work to do, despite many households already sprucing up their properties between March and early September, including 60 per cent of respondents painting their homes and 37 per cent fixing or building furniture.
"The UK's DIY season normally runs from spring until the October half term to coincide with warmer weather and longer days. But this is no normal year and, as restrictions tighten again, 25 per cent of respondents are planning additional tasks before the end of October. 34 per cent intend to complete jobs before Christmas. If shoppers follow through with their plans, it will mean an additional GBP 552 mio is spent on DIY between September and December compared with last year - including an extra GBP 124 mio on garden work and GBP 119 mio on homeware items," says Joanna Parman, strategic insight director at Kantar.
