The Romanian DIY market grew by 8.5 per cent to a volume of EUR 12.4 bn in 2017, according to estimates by the market research company PMR. For 2018 an increase of 7.4 per cent to EUR 13.3 bn is expected, Bricoretail.ro reports. Over half of the market volume is accounted for by the country's modern DIY chains, and it is predicted that their influence will become even greater in the next few years.
The Romanian company Dedeman is the runaway market leader with sales of EUR 1.4 bn and a network of 49 stores. According to Bricoretail.ro, its sales are 3.5 times greater than those of second-placed operator Arabesque. This is another Romanian company that is regarded as the country's biggest building materials retailer. Apart from its 22 Arabesque outlets, it has operates seven stores under its new distribution channel Mathaus.
