Painting your home is still a DIY matter. On average in Europe, 71 per cent of projects that involve painting your home are carried out by the consumers themselves and not a professional. These are the results of the European Home Improvement Monitor by the Dutch USP marketing consultancy.
However the share of DIY enthusiasts varies considerably from country to country. It is at its lowest at 59 per cent in Spain and 62 per cent in Italy and at its highest at 81 per cent in both Belgium and France. Germany, at 71 per cent, lies right on the European average. In general, painting work in outside areas is more often awarded to professionals than painting inside the home.
If painters are commissioned, they usually decide which brand of paint is used. Only in Poland (65 per cent) and the UK (55 per cent) do the majority of private customers make this decision.
