Massbuild, the home improvement retail and building materials division of the South African Massmart group, ended the first half of 2018 with sales amounting to ZAR 6.413 bn. This equates to an increase of 7.6 per cent and of 5.7 per cent for like-for-like sales. Contractor sales growth for the period was higher than that for retail customers, according to the company.
The division currently operates 110 stores: 38 Builders Warehouse stores in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia, 47 Builders Express stores in South Africa and Mozambique, and 14 Builders Trade Depots as well as 11 Builders Superstores in South Africa. In the first half of 2018, two Builders Express stores were opened and one Builder Trade Depot store was closed in South Africa. One Builders Express store was opened in Maputo, Mozambique. The company intends to open another six stores during this financial year, including one in Lusaka, Zambia.
