Leroy Merlin continues to grow in Russia. While most of its competitors saw a downturn in their fortunes in 2017, Leroy Merlin Russia (Groupe Adeo) at least managed a modest increase, posting a 1.5 per cent rise in sales.
The chain's retail area grew by as much as 22 per cent. In an interview with retail.ru, Vicent Gentil, the general director of Leroy Merlin Russia, forecast growth of five to six per cent for this year. Thanks to the twelve Kesko stores recently acquired, the company will this year comfortably exceed its previously envisaged target of 20 new openings a year, involving a volume of investment of 30 bn roubles. Given the current total of 87 outlets, Gentil foresees potential overall for 300 stores in Russia.
The acquisition of the Kesko stores, eight of which are located in Saint Petersburg, advances the development of the chain by ten years at a stroke in Gentil's opinion. All the stores taken over will be closed for six months to switch over the concept and for rebranding.
The proportion of online retailing is expected to increase in the next five years from one per cent at present to seven to eight per cent. Another of Leroy Merlin Russia's strategic aims is to grow the share of B2B business of 20 per cent hitherto to 50 per cent.
