World market for DIY grew by three per cent in 2015

In 2015, the world market turnover of the DIY and home improvement sector reached € 538 bn, an increase of three per cent compared to last year. North America and Europe combined represent 86 per cent of this world market, although their joint population accounts for only 23 per cent of the world population. The DIY markets of these two continents total € 463 bn. North America reaches 57 per cent of the world market, and Europe 29 per cent. North America had the highest average DIY expenditure per capita in 2015 at € 854. These figures were published by Fediyma, the umbrella organisation of the European DIY manufacturers' associations, in its new "Global Home Improvement Report 2016". Due to new calculation principles, no comparison is possible with the world market figures published by Fediyma in previous years.
Approximately 83 per cent of the global DIY market (€ 447 bn) is concentrated in only eight countries: the USA, Germany, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Italy. Moreover, the three major DIY countries in Europe (Germany, France and the United Kingdom) represent 57 per cent of the continent's market.
The top ten major DIY retailers worldwide are Home Depot (USA), Lowe's (USA), Groupe Adeo (France), Kingfisher (UK), Bunnings (Australia), Menards (USA), Obi (Germany), Sears (USA), Bauhaus (Germany), and Canadian Tire (Canada).
