The market leader has just about matched its previous year's figures, while the competitors are getting closer and closer. That's a brief summary of how German DIY store operators' sales revenue developed last year, as revealed in the current Dähne Statistik DIY + Garten 2016. The standard reference for German DIY industry figures came out in May.
Whereas the market leader Obi held on to its total revenue of € 6.7 bn (national and international) in 2015, Bauhaus took a huge leap forward with an increase of 5.5 per cent (= € 320 mio) to € 6.12 bn and Hornbach also managed a significant sales increase of 3.8 per cent (= € 150 mio), resulting in € 4.05 bn. On the whole, the top 20 DIY store operators increased their revenues by € 881 mio (+ 3.1 per cent) to € 29.3 bn in 2015.
In Germany, Obi increased its sales by 1.3 per cent to € 3.914 bn. This means that Germany's market leader lost out abroad (- € 49 mio = -1.7 per cent) and with sales in Germany of € 2.786 bn is only just ahead of Bauhaus (€ 2.55 bn; + € 168 mio = 7.1 per cent). For its part Bauhaus did better abroad than in Germany (€ 3.57 bn; + € 152 mio = 4.4 per cent). Altogether the top 20 increased their sales in Germany in 2015 by € 623 mio (=3.0 per cent) to € 21.156 bn, while growth of € 259 mio (=3.2 per cent) to € 8.357 bn was recorded abroad.
The figures for store development indicate that the Praktiker/Max Bahr collapse has now been surmounted. German DIY companies operated 134 more stores in Germany and abroad in 2015 than they did in 2014 (3 974; 3.5 per cent). After three years of significant decline (-298 stores in all), the industry seems to have consolidated, with 43 new outlets opening in Germany alone (1.4 per cent).
The total retail areas of DIY stores increased more strongly than sales and the number of stores, rising by 5.0 per cent overall, nationally by 2.2 per cent and internationally by 12.1 per cent.
