In 1966, exactly 50 years ago, the brand name Gardena was born. To celebrate this occasion, the history of Gardena has been turned into a book with the help of many people who were there at the time. The author is well known: he is Dr Joachim Bengelsdorf, historian and chief editor of diy, the specialist magazine for the German-speaking DIY and garden industry. The book entitled "Passion for the garden - A primer in turquoise and orange" has been published in both a German and English edition by Dähne Verlag.
As the history of Gardena is closely linked to the University of Ulm, it also made sense to open an exhibition in honour of the same occasion with the title "Design. System. Brand." together with the Archive department of the University of Ulm's Institute of Design. It tells the story of success and design using selected pieces from the company archive: from its beginnings in the 1960s up to Smart Gardening in the year 2016.
Both together were a good reason to officially introduce the book and exhibition at the Institute of Design on 20 May. Almost one hundred invited guests - many former Gardena employees, today's managers, authors of the guest contributions and friends of the company - were looking forward to seeing the book and exhibition. Martin Mäntele from the Institute of Design welcomed the guests as host and Sascha Menges, President of Gardena, was pleased about the great amount of interest. Here he thanked everyone involved, and above all, the former chief representative of Gardena Hans-Rudolf Müller, who died in December 2015.
The event was made more special as even the founder of the company Werner Kress attended. He couldn't miss the opportunity to say a few words to those present, bringing together history, the present and the future. Finally the author also came into his own: he read a part of a chapter.
