On 1 May the German cooperative Hagebau gained the Belgian cooperative Menouquin SCRL as a member. Menouquin currently has 112 members operating 125 stores, made up of 123 outlets in Belgium and two in Luxembourg. They are not only involved in DIY retailing but also run 56 retail sites under the Handy Home brand.
Hitherto Hagebau has only operated in Belgium through two outlets belonging to a Luxembourg partner. It sees potential for further growth in the Benelux states both in the DIY and retail trade. No introduction of the Hagebaumarkt retail brand, under which Hagebau partners are represented in the market in Germany and Austria, is envisaged according to the cooperative's central office.
The purchasing terms in the alliance with Hagebau were a key criterion for joining for the Menouquin members.
Hagebau has stepped up its internationalisation activities in the last two years; partners in Spain joined the cooperative in January 2015, followed by new members from the Netherlands in February 2016.
