The Bosch Group in Germany is entering into a strategic alliance with the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba to strengthen collaboration in the fields of big-data-based marketing, the internet of things (IoT) and omnichannel retailing.
Bosch opened its first sales office in China back in 1909 and since 2010 has been selling directly to Chinese consumers via the Alibaba B2C website Tmall. Bosch operates four flagship stores on Tmall, selling household appliances, power tools, automotive accessories and services and heating and cooling systems.
The strategic partnership extends over various sectors of Alibaba such as the IoT, cloud computing and the artificial intelligence R&D team to develop networked smart appliances.
China is Bosch's biggest market outside Germany and its biggest growth driver. Sales in China accounted for 57.8 per cent of Bosch's overall sales in the Asia-Pacific region in 2015 and contributed 15.8 per cent of its total global sales.
The Bosch Group recorded sales of 12.5 bn euros in China in 2016, an increase of 12 per cent over the previous year. In the last ten years Bosch had already achieved an average annual growth rate of over 20 per cent. It increased its sales revenue in the PRC sevenfold in this period.
