German DIY retailing grows by 1.5 per cent

Sales in the German DIY trade increased by 1.5 per cent to a volume of EUR 18.24 bn in 2016. In like-for-like terms, the increase was 0.8 per cent. The figures were released by the German Federation of DIY and Garden Product Retailers (BHB).  According to the Federation, the second and third quarters of 2016, with above-average growth rates of 3.0 and 2.9 per cent respectively, had a decisive impact on the year.
The growth drivers among the ranges were walls and flooring, tools and machinery and garden products. However, lifestyle and decorating (-8.7 per cent) and household goods (-7.0 per cent) suffered a sharp decline. This year the BHB anticipates sales growth of 1.3 per cent in the DIY store sector, with like-for-like growth of 1.0 per cent.
