A large shopping centre in Moscow that specialised in building supplies has burned to the ground. The Sindika shopping centre was on the outer Moscow ring road, around 16 kilometres north-west of the city centre. Last Sunday, 8 October, a fire broke out in a building materials store room and spread quickly. Firefighters and police evacuated around 3 000 shoppers from the mall. Three people were injured.
The shopping centre contained 1 200 stores, including a kitchen studio, bathroom fittings supplier, paint and plumbing businesses and building materials stores as well as a Stroy DIY megastore. With a total retail area of 130 000 m² it was one of the biggest building supplies centres in Moscow.
